Baby Djinn!

Speaking of getting back to making things! I’ve been working my way through some old furniture, painting it and breathing new life into each piece.

Update!

It has been a while since I even considered the idea of making. After leaving Portland, with all my artwork stashed in a small storage unit, I have been running away from making, like a djinn and Besme alah!

Finally, I was tired of carrying a body that was not engaged with materials—not thinking about the possibility of weaving, soldering, molding, cutting, combining, breaking, or forming—and of not spending most of my days in messy, heavily stained studio clothing!

Like many other predictable creatives, I took refuge in drawing, but not on paper, on furniture around me.

For a long time, I used creating to distract myself from how fast time is swishing around us, aging me away from home. I used making to give myself a sense of control.

It took a major life-changing incident for me to be thrown out of this illusory land.

Now that some time has passed, I have explored life away from the studio; I am back, revisiting the novelty of making.

I considered including a collage for the final touches, but the only thing that could capture the past three years is this sketch I made a little over three years ago.
